\u201cPoor\u00a0<\/i>me,\u201d Morgan Wallen<\/strong> wails on the opening line of \u201cWhiskey Glasses,\u201d<\/strong> stretching out the two-word phrase before he repeats it again with a completely different meaning \u2014 \u201cPour<\/i>\u00a0me another drink.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the kind of first lyric that grabs you right away\u00a0and<\/i>\u00a0contains a clever twist, the ideal scenario for any country song. And for \u201cWhiskey Glasses,\u201d<\/strong> one of this year\u2019s most unexpected hits, it has worked out quite well.<\/p>\n

Not only has the upbeat breakup anthem gone platinum and earned 125 million streams on Spotify, it landed 26-year-old Wallen<\/strong> his second No. 1 hit: \u201cWhiskey Glasses\u201d<\/strong> topped the country radio charts\u00a0for three weeks<\/a>\u00a0this summer, a rarity in a genre that quickly cycles through the songs at the top of the chart.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a lot of cool things about the song that drew me to it pretty much immediately,\u201d said Wallen, who is nominated for best new artist at Wednesday\u2019s Country Music Association Awards. \u201cThe way it has blown up has been really crazy to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhiskey Glasses\u201d<\/strong> was written by Kevin Kadish \u2014 best known for co-writing some of Meghan Trainor\u2019s biggest hits (\u201cAll About That Bass,\u201d \u201cLips Are Movin\u201d) and Jason Mraz\u2019s \u201cWordplay\u201d \u2014 and Ben Burgess, who has written for country stars from Dierks Bentley to Jake Owen. While a seemingly unlikely pair, Burgess theorized that\u2019s why \u201cWhiskey Glasses\u201d worked. He dubbed himself, Kadish and Wallen \u201ca crazy trifecta of wild dudes that are all uniquely different in our own way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in 2015, Burgess walked into a songwriting session with an idea for a song title typed into his phone: \u201cWhiskey Glasses.\u201d He didn\u2019t know what it meant exactly, but Kadish was immediately intrigued. After all, there were lots of songs about beer goggles. Why not write one about whiskey glasses?<\/p>\n
