NEW YORK, NY\u2013 Clad in a flannel cut-off shirt, denim jeans and boots, Morgan Wallen opened his Dangerous Tour at Madison Square Garden tonight, the first stop on his 54-city trek across the country. With a decibel level averaging 30dBs louder than the average game at the arena, the songwriter\/superstar eased into the night opening the show with current single \u201cSand In My Boots\u201d solo on piano before asking the crowd, \u201cWhat you say we do something country in New York City tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s exactly what the 13,237 crowd did. Showing up early, by 8 pm the crowd was at 92% capacity, a full 75 minutes before their headliner took the stage.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy name is Morgan Wallen,\u201d he said introducing himself, three songs in to his 23-song-set.\u201cWe were supposed to start our tour in Indiana, but the good Lord had other plans, so for 2022, our first show is right here in Madison Square Garden,\u201d before grinningly adding, \u201cMake it hard for the next people who come see us on tour.\u201d Broken into four quarters and overtime, with two surprise guests (ERNEST on \u201cFlower Shops\u201dand HARDY on \u201cHe Went To Jared\u201d), the sold-out crowd was treated to music spanning both of Wallen\u2019s albums, 2018\u2019s If I Know Me (\u201cChasin\u2019 You,\u201d \u201cUp Down\u201d) and 15 songs from 2021\u2019s 33-song Dangerous: The Double Album. During \u201c7 Summers\u201d fans mimed the lyrics and facetimed those at home, and during \u201cCover Me Up\u201d phone flashlights stayed on while Wallen confessed, \u201cthis is one of my favorite songs to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n
As he dove into his final two songs (\u201cWasted On You\u201d and \u201cWhiskey Glasses\u201d) standing on the edge of his stage, the boy from East Tennessee said in closing, \u201cI never thought I\u2019d be doing this. You all are incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
